By now, most media outlets are plastered by up-to-the-second coverage of the events on Parliament Hill this morning. Information is coming at a rate that is faster than can be filtered as to what is accurate and what is not. I’ve seen pronouncements and judgements already, with people bordering on hysterics.
Regardless of what the motivation for these awful events are, fear is a very poor lens through which to make decisions, or to offer responses. Remember that this is first and foremost a criminal act, and should be treated as such.
In the meantime, I offer this prayer:
Gracious God, in times of crisis,
we seek comfort, hope, and assurance.
Save us from the temptation to respond in fear,
in the awful events in Ottawa today.
For those in danger, bring them to safety,
for those injured, work with those who care for them,
for those who have been killed, we pray for their families.
Loving God, we pray for peace,
we pray for a rational response,
and move us to a footing of hope.
We offer in the name of the one we call
the Prince of Peace. Amen.
